Paint Sticks
Paint sticks are an inexpensive, portable and easy to use medium. They are suitable for paper and canvas.
Drawings
Sue draws in pen and her pen drawings vary from sparse and pared back, to a riot of suggested detail. The suggestion in these drawings is part of the magic.
Painting
Sue uses acrylics and inks on her paintings. Paper is her preferred material although she also works on canvas and cardboard.
Watercolour and pen
Sue enjoys using watercolour for its bright pops of colour and its relative softness in comparison with paint sticks.

Sue's Story
In 2024, Sue became a first-time exhibitor in the Lester Prize, having invested in daily art practice since mid-2023 that is energetic, unapologetic, and intentional through pen, with pops of colour in acrylic or watercolour mediums.
Born in NSW outback town, Broken Hill and, after serving in the RAAF, Sue moved to outback WA in 1996. Attending a community TAFE drawing class in Kalgoorlie she received a “Highly Commended” prize for her work on butcher’s paper “Ink with Sticks” (1997).
Sue lives and practices her creative arts in Dunsborough WA.

Viktor is my son. This is how he wants to be seen. Strong. Powerful. Masculine. Do you see him? I see him. 25 years of seeing as a mother does. This portrait represents the struggle of letting Viktor be who he wants to be. So much more than what I permit him to be. This portrait is me finding the courage to help him be who he is. Viktor wants to be seen. Who do you see? Do you see Viktor? Does he fade into your periphery or does he come at you with his guns blazing? Strong. Powerful. Masculine. Viktor is powerful, he is funny, he is strong, he is difficult, he is ambitious, he is difficult, he is capable, he is difficult, he is anxious, he is a problem solver. Viktor is not satisfied with what he has. Viktor has Down Syndrome. Viktor is loved.

I draw quickly and energetically with a pen in a sketchbook either A4 or A5, highlighting with acrylic paint sticks.
The fast method of drawing is pure instinct, my brain and my hands are working in sync.
The penwork is jagged, with scratchings and suggestions.

As an observer of people, my medium is easily carried as I find my studio could be a comfortable chair, a train, a bus, a street
or a waiting room.
